Julius' Molasses Cookies
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 4 tbsp molasses
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp cloves
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ginger
- White sugar for rolling dough in
- Candied ginger to taste, chopped (optional)
Method
- Preheat the oven to 375° F; line as many cookie sheets as needed.
- Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices in a separate bowl and set aside.
- Cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg and mix well.
- Add the dry ingredients and mix, then add the candied ginger and chill the dough.
- Roll the dough into walnut-sized balls and dip in sugar.
- Place the balls on a cookie sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
Notes
This is another super old recipe that's been around in the family for generations. These are named Julius' molasses cookies, but the Julius in question could refer to any one of like three people because of how long this recipe has been around for. As with many recipes in our old family cookbook, the original calls for shortening, but we use butter. Also, you could probably add more spices to give it more flavour, since the original is spiced for old Midwesterners' tastebuds.
